SC Johnson Recognized with Climate Leadership Award for Achieving Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management

Company’s Commitment to Addressing Climate Change Recognized for 3rd Time

RACINE, Wis., (Feb. 24, 2015) – SC Johnson announced today it has received the 2015 Climate Leadership Award (CLA) for Excellence in Greenhouse (GHG) Gas Management (Goal Achievement).

Now in its fourth year, this national awards program recognizes and incentivizes exemplary corporate, organizational, and individual leadership in response to climate change. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) co-sponsors the CLAs with three NGO partners: Association of Climate Change Officers (ACCO), Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), and The Climate Registry (TCR).

“SC Johnson continues to set its sights on reducing GHGs to create a more sustainable environment for future generations,” said Fisk Johnson, SC Johnson Chairman and CEO. “We have long believed that business has both an opportunity and an obligation to make the world better. This drives us to set high environmental goals and – as each goal is realized – to set even higher expectations for the future.”

In 2014, SC Johnson exceeded its 2016 GHG reduction goal of 7 percent by achieving a nearly 17 percent reduction. The company received two previous CLA recognitions – the 2013 Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management (Goal Setting) certificate and the 2012 Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management (Goal Achievement) award.

“I am proud to recognize SC Johnson and all of our Climate Leadership Award winners for their actions to reduce the harmful carbon pollution that’s fueling climate change,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. “Our winners are providing the leadership, commitment, and solutions needed to cut greenhouse gas emissions and meet the challenge of a changing climate head on.”

A Long Standing Commitment to Sustainability

Leading in sustainability has been fundamental to how SC Johnson has operated for decades. Since 2000, when SC Johnson established its GHG emissions benchmark, the company has reduced emissions by 40 percent. Initiatives that demonstrate the company’s U.S. commitment to reducing carbon pollution include:

  • In 2008, the company secured a source of wind power for nearly half of the electricity required to run its Bay City, Mich., facility. This helped to keep 28,500 metric tons of GHG emissions out of the atmosphere annually. SC Johnson increased its Bay City wind power purchases by 50 percent in 2013, representing an additional 14,000 metric ton reduction in GHG emissions per year.
  • In late 2012, SC Johnson started up two 415-foot wind turbines at Waxdale, the company’s largest global manufacturing facility in Mt. Pleasant, Wis. The wind turbines are responsible for cutting 6,000 metric tons of GHG emissions each year.
