SC Johnson Donates to Vital Community Literacy Programs

Funding will support Racine Public Library’s new bookmobile and 2016 Battle of the Books challenge

RACINE, Wis., October 31, 2015 — Celebrating the start of November’s National Family Literacy Month, SC Johnson is making two financial commitments to literacy and reading advocacy programs managed by the Racine Public Library.

“Literacy lays the foundation for the successful future of our community’s youth and the generations to come,” said Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson. “That’s why we have decided to purchase a new bookmobile for the library and continue to fund the Battle of the Books. We’re so pleased to be associated with these programs and what they aim to achieve.”

SC Johnson has committed to purchase the bookmobile which is expected to cost an estimated $250,000. A library-on-wheels, the bookmobile will bring thousands of books to neighborhoods in eastern Racine County. The new bookmobile will replace the original bus which successfully accounted for more than 100,000 book check-outs at 19 different weekly stops across the area.

“Time and time again SC Johnson sees a need and comes through for our community,” said Jessica MacPhail, Director, Racine Public Library. “Our bookmobile plays such an important role in strengthening the library’s connection to those we serve. We will continue to create a personalized experience for everyone who interacts with our staff and enjoys the benefits of reading.”

SC Johnson will also provide its third annual $50,000 donation to support the library’s Battle of the Books, a literature contest for 4th and 5th grade students in Racine County. Student teams read a list of titles selected by local librarians and show off their knowledge in public competitions.
