SC Johnson’s Greenlist™ Screening Process

We choose the ingredients we use carefully

Every ingredient in every SC Johnson product goes through our thorough screening process to determine its potential impact on human health and the environment. Known as SC Johnson’s Greenlist™, this process is a science-based, four-step evaluation grounded in best-in-class data collection and driven by our commitment to continually improve our products. If an ingredient is flagged, it undergoes further assessment to determine if it can be used safely in our products before being placed on our “not allowable” list.

We ask: could this ingredient cause ...

Our data sources include:

  • California Proposition 65
  • World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer monographs.

Of the very few that are flagged, we set a safety factor over a thousand times lower than the lowest level that could impact human health or the environment.

2

Longer-term environmental effects?

Our data sources include:

  • European Chemical Agency (ECHA)
  • ECHA’s Substances of Very High Concern list
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s PBT Profiler and criteria for PBT (Persistence, Bioaccumulation, and Toxicity) assessment

Any indication of being a PBT will cause an ingredient to be flagged.

3

This step looks at potential short-term effects like skin irritation or the release of volatile organic compounds into the air.

Our data sources include:

  • supplier Safety Data Sheets
  • U.S. National Institutes of Health’s TOXNET
  • Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development guidelines.

Fragrance ingredients we use, do not use or limit the use of
SC Johnson’s Fragrance Palette

We only use fragrance ingredients that first meet the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and our own stricter internal standards. In addition, each fragrance is a mixture of literally dozens of ingredients, so the amount of any one ingredient in any product is minimal.

We list all fragrance chemicals down to .01% of the total product formula. Occasionally, the amount of fragrance in a total product is so small that even disclosing 99.99% of the product formula doesn’t meet our standard for providing enough information. We list the top 10 fragrance ingredients in those cases, provided there is at least 20 present.

Fragrances that are not used
This ingredient list includes fragrance ingredients that we have never used and some ingredients we chose to top using and removed from product fragrances. We update this list regularly.
